Why In2scienceUK Matters

Social mobility in the UK remains among the lowest in the developed world with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds facing major barriers in progressing to degrees, apprenticeships and careers. As a result, there is an extreme barrier with just 10% of life science professionals, 15% of academics and 6% of doctors are from working class backgrounds.

The In2scienceUK work placement programme provides a once in a lifetime opportunity for young people to collaborate with dedicated volunteer STEM professionals, undertaking cutting edge research and learning STEM skills in some of Britain’s pioneering centres of STEM education, research and industry.

We are determined to remove all barriers for every young person with a keen interest in STEM careers. Together we can give more young people the opportunity to gain the skills and confidence they need to progress towards fascinating STEM careers.

We are immensely proud to be supported by STEM institutions from across the sector. By bringing varied companies, higher education institutions and research centres together we can create a brighter future for young people and the STEM sector at large. By fostering greater collaboration and engagement within the sector we will encourage inclusion, equality and diversity in STEM.
