Nick has followed a public sector career in local and central government and the NHS, retiring in 2024. As a senior civil servant, he led on major changes in professional regulation, medical and nursing revalidation and the approach to whistle-blowing. Earlier, he led on the establishment of NICE and the introduction of Agenda for Change. Nic studied Mathematics at Cambridge, undertook his PhD at Leeds and a post-doctoral research fellowship at Edinburgh. Nick is blind and a guide dog user. He was awarded the CBE in 2018 for services to the NHS. He has always had a strong interest in promoting social mobility and widening access to careers in STEM subjects.
