Make a difference and inspire the pioneers of the future
In 2023 we’re looking to work with amazing researchers and STEM professionals who can share their insights and expertise with disadvantaged students by hosting them for one or two week work experience placements during the summer.
Work placements typically involve a mixture of hands-on and hands-off activities to fit around our volunteers’ work schedule. Hands-on activities can include undertaking experiments, mock interviews, scenario tasks and data analysis. Hands-off activities can involve attending team meetings, interviews with other colleagues and setting research or presentation tasks for the students. The In2science team will provide support and resources to help plan placement activities.
To find out more, join one of our volunteer information sessions:
- Tuesday 17th January 8:00-9:00
- Thursday 9th February 15:00-16:00
- Monday 20th February 10:00 – 11:00
- Friday 10th March 12:00-13:00
- Friday 24th March 17:00-18:00
Each session will be 45 minutes long, including a 30 minute presentation and 15 minute Q&A. These are free to attend and open to all. Head to the Eventbrite Page to register your place.

The Programme in 2023
The 2023 In2science programme will connect disadvantaged Year 12 students to STEM professionals from different fields. Our programme takes place in the summer holidays between Year 12 and Year 13, a time when students are finalising their decisions about universities or apprenticeships. Our students will gain access to exciting in-person and online opportunities including work experience placements, skills and careers workshops, and events.
The In2science team will work closely with hosts to develop and deliver an engaging placement, enabling students of all abilities to explore STEM beyond the classroom, develop key skills and boost their applications for further education.
Throughout the summer we will also be running public engagement competitions, giving In2science students the chance to develop their skills in written and visual communication, have fun and win prizes!
To round off the programme, we will host in-person and online celebration events in recognition of the hard work and dedication from students and volunteers. Attendees from across the In2science community will have the opportunity to network and socialise, sharing experiences of the summer programme and learning more about the Alumni Community and our In2research programme. There are also inspirational talks from students, hosts, alumni and staff.
Host Eligibility and Selection
We are looking for host applications from people with an interest in outreach and a passion for addressing the inequalities that exist within the STEM sector. Whether you’re an academic, PhD student, technician or other STEM professional, we want you to apply for our programme and share your experiences with underrepresented students and help to ensure they reach their full potential.
Where your place of work is located will affect your eligibility to host with us. For information about our current regions, as well as our selection process for hosts please see our FAQs.

I’m passionate about science and diversity, and supporting young people to fulfil their STEM potential is a great way to support both. I absolutely recommend In2scienceUK, it’s a great way to support the development of the UK’s next STEM generation”.
