Why did you apply for In2STEM?
Abigail: I wanted some form of work experience and to check that science lab work is really what I want to do. I’ve had an interest in it, but at school, we don’t really get the chance to do much of it.
Erin: I wanted more experience in the science field. None of my family have experience in STEM. I knew I wanted to do something science-based, but I wasn’t entirely sure what, so this felt like a good opportunity to help make that decision.
What sort of things did you do during your placement? And how did your host support you?
Abigail: We were in the Ecology department, working on a project related to mosquitoes. The research focuses on finding ethical ways to attract and kill mosquitoes without using insecticides. We’ve been helping with experiments — feeding mosquitoes, doing olfactory experiments to see which smells they’re attracted to and studying where they lay their eggs based on water types and algae. We have even learned how to identify male and female mosquitoes to use them for different experiments.
Erin: Our host was amazing – she was very friendly and supportive. She broke everything down into simple, understandable terms, which made it all easier to follow. I study BTEC Science, which is more practical, but this was a different level of hands-on experience.
Did you find the programme useful?
Abigail: This placement gave me access to equipment and experiments we don’t have at school – it’s been eye-opening. I’ve developed new lab skills, and it gave me a better idea of what to expect at university. The experience is great preparation for research projects in the future. I want to do Biomedicine at university and our host helped by explaining the difference between accredited and non-accredited university courses, which I found really useful.
Erin: The placement was my highlight! It helped me to understand more about science in the real world. I also prefer hands-on learning, so this worked really well for me. The workshops I attended were informative too. I’m planning to apply for apprenticeships – the programme has reassured me I’m heading in the right direction!
What would you say to someone thinking about applying for next year?
Abigail: It’s a great way to figure out if STEM is right for you. Even if you don’t like it, that’s still useful to know early on. It’s hard to find this kind of opportunity elsewhere.
Erin: Yes, a hundred percent!
