Earlier this summer, we had the pleasure of hosting two students from Birkbeck, University of London as part of the university’s Micro-placements Programme. Melis Su-Eksi joined us as a Digital Platforms Intern to support In2careers, while Ebba Dahlman joined our Development and Communications team as a Digital Communications Intern. We caught up with them to find out about their In2scienceUK internship experience.
Can you tell us a bit about yourselves? Why did you want to take part in an internship at In2scienceUK?
Melis: I’m currently studying Management. I’ve always been curious about digital marketing and wanted to explore different skills to improve myself. That’s why I applied to the In2scienceUK internship – I saw it as a great opportunity to grow, learn new tools, and better understand how organisations work behind the scenes!
Ebba: I’m currently a Marketing student and I’m passionate about communications, digital media, and how marketing can be used to make a positive social impact. I applied for the internship at In2scienceUK because I was excited by the organisation’s mission to improve access to STEM for underrepresented young people. I wanted to gain hands-on experience in a marketing role that combined creativity, strategy, and purpose, while contributing to a cause I genuinely care about.
What have you been up to during your time with us?
Melis: During my In2scienceUK placement, I’ve been involved in various tasks like creating flyers, interviewing students, preparing spreadsheets, and helping design and organise projects such as the Role Model campaign.
I also learned how to use Canva more effectively (thanks to Dora) and I gained insight into project management and how the organisation’s website and outreach efforts work. These experiences really helped me understand what it takes to reach and engage an audience.
Ebba: During my time at In2scienceUK, I supported the team with content creation, social media management, event management and other administrative tasks. I helped schedule and develop content for platforms like LinkedIn, and Instagram, and supported the promotion of key programmes and events, and learned how to use lots of different digital tools.
Beyond technical skills, I gained insight into the non-profit sector and how marketing strategies are adapted for a mission-driven organisation. I learned the importance of inclusive messaging, tone of voice, and storytelling in engaging different audiences, from students to corporate partners.
What’s been your favourite part?
Melis: My favourite part was being able to contribute to real decisions with Ciara and Danielle. They were always so supportive and open to ideas! It made me feel like a valued part of the team, and I really enjoyed that collaborative environment.
Ebba: My favourite part has been seeing the real-world impact of the work we were doing, especially when promoting success stories and student testimonials. Knowing that the content I helped create was inspiring young people to pursue careers in STEM was incredibly rewarding. I also enjoyed the collaborative environment and the helpful team and want to give a special shoutout to Hannah, Roxana and Ciara, who were particularly supportive, and who always encouraged my ideas and gave me room to grow.
What’s next for you both?
Melis: I want to continue developing my skills in digital marketing and project management. I’d love to keep working with organisations that have a positive social impact, like In2scienceUK. Being part of this cause, helping them reach more people and make a difference has truly been an honour.
Ebba: I hope to pursue a career in marketing and communications, ideally in a role where I can combine my creative skills with purpose-driven work. This internship has strengthened my interest in working with charities, education-focused organisations, or socially responsible brands. I plan to continue building my experience and eventually take on a strategic marketing role that focuses on campaigns with real impact. Although this internship went by so quickly, I am grateful for the experience and the knowledge I have gained along the way. Now I am ready for the next chapter, whatever it may be!
