The In2STEM programme (formerly In2science summer programme) is a free programme consisting of an in-person work experience placement, live online workshops, competitions and events. By taking part in the programme, students gain hands-on experience working with leading scientists, researchers and professionals, and expand their personal and professional skills. It includes:

Introduce In2STEM in your school today!

Why not give your students the opportunity to participate in the 2024 In2STEM programme? Student applications are now open.

The In2STEM programme consists of

  • A one or two week in-person work experience placement hosted by a STEM professional. This allows young people a unique glimpse into what a career in a STEM field is like by allowing them to gain hands-on work experience, develop their professional skills and explore potential professional pathways that interest them.
  • Live online skills, careers and employability workshops. The workshops help build students’ skills, knowledge and confidence, and offer them a chance to get a head start on some of the other skills that can help them with university and apprenticeship applications.
  • Public engagement competitions. Our competitions give students the opportunity to express their creative side, share their newly-developed knowledge and win great prizes.
  • Student induction and celebration events. These support students prior to the start of the programme, and help them celebrate their success after completing it.
  • Access to our interactive In2careers platform and Alumni Community of over 2000 current students, researchers & employees at some of the UK’s most famous institutions.

Gaining meaningful real-world experience is invaluable…

It’s given me many more ideas about what I could do, things that I didn’t think were available to me. All I could base my ideas on before was what was taught in school, but now I have real-life experience.

This placement made me realise that a career in science or continuing education into research was what I wanted or would want in the future. A lot of the people working there had different experiences as to how they got to where they are.

This experience has changed my view on the field of Chemistry by showing me how broad the subject can be! My placement helped me understand better the potential career of becoming a synthetic chemist which I am now interested in pursuing!

The experience allowed me to drop the stereotype of what a scientist or engineer actually does and who they are. They are not only in the lab or product development but important throughout the whole process. This experience gave me the opportunity to network and see the benefits of a large international company, that I thought would otherwise be impossible for someone like me.

On this placement, I found that there are many more Chemistry applications to medicine than a lot of people are led to believe. I was given insight into engineering, physics and even learnt some computer programming, which falls under the umbrella of chemistry and contributes to current biomedical solutions.
