The In2science summer programme
The 2023 In2science summer programme will offer Year 12 students the opportunity to participate in both online and in-person activities, helping them to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to take the next steps in their STEM journey.
The programme consists of:
- A practical, hands-on work experience placement hosted by STEM professionals, connecting students to experts working at the cutting edge of research and innovation.
- Online skills, employability and careers workshops throughout the summer, connecting students with like-minded peers and experts, sharing knowledge, and helping students with their next step towards university, apprenticeships and a STEM career.
- Public engagement competitions with prizes, giving students the opportunity to showcase their creative side and communicate what they have learnt on their work experience placement.
The programme will take place from Monday 24th July to Friday 25th August 2023 and placements will be held within a commutable distance of where students live.
Before the In2science summer programme begins, students will be invited to an induction event sharing key information about the programme. In early autumn, they’ll attend a fun celebration event, recognising and celebrating everything they have achieved on the programme.
Students will also automatically gain access to our Alumni Community after completing the programme, joining a network of over 2000 members, and having the opportunity to explore additional online workshops, monthly newsletters, scholarships opportunities, events invitations and more.
The In2science summer programme is free to take part in. We will also provide students with a bursary to cover travel and lunch costs during their work placement.

Our Student Stories

It’s given me many more ideas about what I could do, things that I didn’t think were available to me. All I could base my ideas on before was what was taught in school, but now I have real-life experience.
LauraOxford Centre for Human Brain Activity, University of Oxford
This placement made me realise that a career in science or continuing education into research was what I wanted or would want in the future. A lot of the people working there had different experiences as to how they got to where they are.
MariamKing’s College London, Department of Physics
This experience has changed my view on the field of Chemistry by showing me how broad the subject can be! My placement helped me understand better the potential career of becoming a synthetic chemist which I am now interested in pursuing!
DahnQueen Mary, University of London, Department of Chemistry
The experience allowed me to drop the stereotype of what I though a scientist or engineer actually does, and who they are. They are not only in the lab or product development but important throughout the whole process. This experience gave me the opportunity to network and see the benefits of a large international company, that I thought would otherwise be impossible for someone like me.
AmirDell Technologies
On this placement, I found that there are many more Chemistry applications to medicine than a lot of people are led to believe. I was given insight into engineering, physics and even learnt some computer programming, which falls under the umbrella of chemistry and contributes to current biomedical solutions.

What is STEM?
The simple answer is, pretty much anything that involves Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths! And it can often come in surprising places; from games design to international development, medical research to sports performance analysis, it’s used in developing your favourite snacks and in the chemistry in your favourite smelling shampoo. STEM is quite literally everywhere, so we highly recommend applying for the programme, and you never know where it might take you.
