The In2scienceUK programme is going online to connect our students with world-class scientists, engineers, technologists, and researchers to develop the skills and confidence for success. The In2scienceUK Virtual Placement Programme will connect you with experts from different fields within science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), who will share their work, insights and tips for success.

What does the programme include?

  • A two-week placement in which you will gain hands-on experience working with leading scientists, researchers and professionals.
  • Careers, employability and STEM skills workshops throughout the summer to build your skills, knowledge and confidence before taking your next step.
  • Access to our team and In2scienceUK alumni to support you with careers and university admission guidance.
  • Test out your Public Engagement skills through our photo, video and blog competitions.
  • A chance to complete a CREST award submission to 
  • Access to our alumni programme of over 1,000 current students, researchers & employees at some of the UK’s most famous institutions. 
  • Eat, drink and win prizes to celebrate your success at our regional celebration days!

What type of placements are available?

In2scienceUK gives our students the opportunity to get hands-on experience within a huge variety of placements at cutting edge STEM industries and world-leading universities. 

The placements and opportunities differ each year and are based on students interest, but past students have taken part in placements working in areas such as; Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, Psychiatry, Engineering, Astronomy, Computer-Aided Design, Fluid Motion Simulation, Rheumatology, Virology, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Construction Engineering, Museology, Neurosciences, Applied Maths & Statistics, Mechanical Engineering, User Interface and User Experience Design, Programming, Experimental Psychology, Martian Geochemistry, Zoology, Computer Sciences, Ecology and many more.

When do the placements take place?

All of our placements take part between the 27th July and the 28th August. To take part in most of our placement opportunities we will require you to be available for two consecutive weeks between these dates.

Will the placement cost me anything?

No, In2scienceUK provides free summer STEM placements for low-income and disadvantaged students. We offer all of our students a bursary to cover their costs during their time on the placement.

Who is Eligible?

Our core eligibility criteria require that you must:

  • Attend a non-selective and state-funded school.
  • Be 16 or over and a current year 12 student or equivalent.
  • Must be studying at least one STEM-related A-Level, BTEC or equivalent. e.g. Physics, Geography, Psychology, Maths, Computer Science, Design Technology, Food Science, Biology, Chemistry.
  • Be Available for a two-week placement.

In addition, to be selected for interview you must also meet at least one of the following (These may differ depending on region);

  • Recipient of Free School Meals (FSM) in year 11, or at sixth form.
  • Have parents or carers with no higher education degree.
  • Current recipient of EMA or Pupil Premium.
  • Currently, live in a POLAR4 Q1 Neighbourhood. Click here to check your area.
  • Live within a one-hour commute of one of our hub cities or towns:

    • Welwyn Garden City
  • We are always expanding our programme to new regions so if you would like to apply for any region please feel free to do so, although we cannot guarantee placements in your area.
  • Each student is shortlisted and interviewed before a placement is offered.

How do I Apply?

  • STEP 1: Apply Online
    Complete our online application form, letting us know why you want to take part in the programme and what your future aspirations are. The deadline for all applications is the 24th April 2020 – we encourage students to apply as early as possible.

  • STEP 2: References
    During the application, we will ask you to nominate a teacher to provide a brief reference for your application. We cannot offer a student an interview without this reference, so please remind them as soon as you have finished your application to check their emails.

  • STEP 3: Interviews
    If you have been shortlisted, we will send you an invite to our regional interviews. Interviews will be held from the 18th to 25th May 2020 at a regional hub city or town.

  • STEP 4: Matches & Pre-Placement Skills Day
    If you have been successful, congratulations! We will send out all placement matches by 16th June 2020 and you will be invited to a regional pre-placement skills day between the 25th and 29th June 2020.

When are the workshops and how do I take part?

Our 2020 workshops will go live on the website on the 15th June 2020 and are managed through Eventbrite. Simply get yourself a free ticket to book yourself a place on the workshop. We will periodically update our workshops to include new workshops, so keep an eye on the website. Due to venue capacity, we have limited places on some of our workshops, so make sure you book early.

How do I enter a competition?

Competitions will open on the 15th June 2020 and all details of how to submit a competition entry will be available on our website.
